The large stone vessel of Structure BH

What is reported

In Structure BH — a rectilinear building near Structure BD, with high surviving walls and two-tier benches — excavators record a large stone vessel set against the north wall. It sits in the same room as several broken T-shaped pillars, a two-step platform, a rock-cut channel and traces of burning. Stone vessels are a recurring feature of Karahan Tepe and its neighbours, but a large example fixed against a wall, rather than a portable bowl, is the kind of detail that hints at a purpose beyond ordinary storage or food preparation.

That is as far as the secure description goes. Karahan Tepe has been excavated only since 2019, and BH is one of the more recently exposed buildings; its account has not yet appeared in a full report.

Where it sits, and why that matters

The vessel does not stand alone. In the same space the excavators note a channel cut into the floor and signs of fire — an arrangement some read as pointing to liquids, heating, or some repeated activity carried out in the room. Set beside the platform and the broken pillars, the vessel reads as part of a fitted-out interior rather than a stray object dropped on a floor.

It is worth resisting the temptation to name a function. A large vessel, a channel and burning could support a ceremonial reading, or an entirely practical one; on the published evidence neither can be shown. What can be said is that BH was a substantial, carefully built room in which this vessel was a fixed feature.

What is still uncertain

Almost every specific number a reader would want is still open: the vessel's exact dimensions and material, how it was made, what it held, and how it relates in time to the rest of the building. The 'BH' label itself, the loci and the object counts have not been independently confirmed in the formal literature we have checked. We therefore treat this as a reporting-grade lead — real and worth recording, but awaiting the excavation's own publication before more is claimed.

This archive would rather state the little that is firm than dress a thin record in false detail. The plain fact is the headline: a large stone vessel, set against the north wall of Structure BH, at a site still being uncovered.
