How Old Is Karahan Tepe?

Karahan Tepe belongs to the same horizon as Göbekli Tepe — broadly the tenth and ninth millennia BCE. But its radiocarbon programme is younger than the site's fame, and precise dates should be handled with more care than headlines suggest.

The short answer

Karahan Tepe is an early Neolithic site of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period, placed by its excavators in broadly the same horizon as Göbekli Tepe — the tenth into the ninth millennium BCE, so roughly 11,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Figures around 9500 BCE for the earliest phases circulate widely, mirroring Göbekli Tepe's date range. That is a reasonable approximation of the published position.

It is an approximation, though, and the reason why matters.

Why the dating is less settled than Göbekli Tepe's

Göbekli Tepe has been excavated since 1995 and has an extensive radiocarbon programme built over decades, including dates from wall plaster and organic material in known stratigraphic positions.

Karahan Tepe's excavation began in 2019. It is a young dig on a very large site, and its absolute chronology is still being assembled. Much of what is publicly stated about its age rests on comparison — the architecture, the pillar forms and the material culture resemble Göbekli Tepe, therefore the dates should be similar.

Comparative dating is legitimate and usually right. It is not the same as a published sequence of radiocarbon determinations tied to specific contexts, and the distinction is worth keeping.

The site has more than one phase

Karahan Tepe is not a single moment. Excavation has revealed a sequence, with the rock-cut chamber and its pillars belonging to one part of it and other structures — including domestic areas — belonging to others.

There is also evidence of deliberate filling of structures, which complicates matters: material used to fill a building can be older or younger than the building itself, and dating the fill does not date the architecture.

So 'how old is Karahan Tepe' resolves into several questions with different answers: when was the site first occupied, when was the pillared chamber built, when was it filled, and when was the site abandoned.

Is it older than Göbekli Tepe?

This is asked constantly, usually prompted by headlines, and the honest answer is that it is not established.

Some reporting has suggested Karahan Tepe may prove older, or that particular structures there predate anything at Göbekli Tepe. Those claims run ahead of the published radiocarbon evidence.

The defensible position is that the two sites are broadly contemporary, part of one regional tradition, with the relationship between their sequences still being worked out. If that changes it will change through publication, not through press coverage.

It is also worth noticing that the question matters less than it sounds. These were neighbouring communities in one landscape. Which mound was first is a smaller question than what they were doing together.

What would sharpen the picture

A published series of radiocarbon dates tied to defined stratigraphic contexts across the site's phases.

Clear separation of dates from construction, use, fill and abandonment.

And correlation with Göbekli Tepe's existing sequence, which would let the two be placed relative to each other rather than each described separately.

Until then, 'broadly contemporary with Göbekli Tepe, tenth to ninth millennium BCE' is the accurate way to state it — and anyone offering a more precise figure should be asked where it comes from.
